Legislation Overview
Title: GUN TRAFFICKING PREVENTION
Description: Creates the Prevention of Gun Trafficking Act. Provides that it is a Class 4 felony for any person to engage in the business of selling, leasing, or otherwise transferring firearms or ammunition without a dealer permit issued by the Department of State Police. Establishes procedures and qualifications for obtaining a permit. Amends the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act. Provides that a person who is not a federally licensed firearm dealer permittee under the Prevention of Gun Trafficking Act and who desires to transfer or sell a firearm to another person, who is not a firearms dealer permittee under that Act, shall do so only through a firearms dealer permittee. Provides exceptions. Amends the Criminal Code of 2012. Provides that if a person who possesses a firearm thereafter loses or misplaces the firearm, or if the firearm is stolen from the person, the person must report the loss or theft to the local law enforcement agency within 72 hours after when he or she knew or reasonably should have known of the loss or theft. Effective immediately.
